Vast Expanse of The Great Wall, Jinshanling, ChinaDo you have a desire to follow a passion? When you set out to live that passion, what stops you?

For me, it’s a billion small things. Everything, nothing, and all the stuff in between.  Most often, I attempt to live my passion only to find the reality is not quite as good as what I believe it to be. This is when the excuses to stop come pouring in.

Sometimes I fight the urge to throw in the towel.  These are the good days; the ones where as I lay my head on the pillow, I feel good, accomplished, and worthwhile. Sometimes I just don’t have the stamina to keep fighting for the goal.  These are the days I go to bed feeling frustrated, stuck, and dare I say worthless.

The trouble with that kind of perception each day is it makes it hard to build momentum, skill, or comfort in my passion.  Chasing my passion will only be satisfying on those days where I press on, persevere to reach a new height, a new learning, or otherwise make progress.  The important thing to look for as I take this journey, is the progress no matter how small.  Once I find that progress, I owe it to myself celebrate it!  Too often we take the small wins for granted.  We expect something medium sized to happen, so the small win seems insignificant barely worth noticing.

I was recently reminded that the Great Wall of China started with a single brick.  This massive structure that can be seen from space, did not appear overnight. Instead it was a journey toward a passion to create a military defense and protect the residents of the country; an effort that has made a lasting impact on the world.

Your Turn:

What is your passion?  What small step can you take today to set your passion in motion?

What will you celebrate along the way to gain momentum toward your goal?
